ChatGPT Prompts for Tailoring Your Resume to a Job Description
Specific prompts you can copy and paste into ChatGPT to help tailor your resume to a job posting, with tips on getting better results.
ChatGPT can help you tailor your resume, but only if you give it the right instructions. A prompt like "make my resume better" will give you vague, generic output. The prompts below are designed to produce results you can use.
Before you start
You'll need two things open: your current resume (copy the full text) and the job description you're targeting (copy the full posting). Paste both into ChatGPT before running any of these prompts.
Start your conversation with:
"I'm going to paste my resume and a job description. Don't do anything yet. Just confirm you've received both."
This stops ChatGPT from generating a response before you've given it everything it needs.
Prompt 1: Find the gaps
"Compare my resume to this job description. List the specific skills, qualifications, and keywords from the job description that are missing or underrepresented in my resume. Be specific."
This gives you a gap analysis. You'll see exactly where your resume doesn't match the posting. Use this list to decide what to change before asking for rewrites.
Prompt 2: Rewrite the summary
"Rewrite my resume summary to match this job description. Use 2 to 3 sentences. Include my actual job title, years of experience, and the most relevant skills from the posting. Do not add any experience or skills I don't already have in my resume."
That last sentence matters. Without it, ChatGPT will sometimes invent qualifications that sound good but aren't yours.
Prompt 3: Rewrite bullet points
"Rewrite the following bullet points from my resume to better match this job description. Use the same language and keywords from the posting. Keep the meaning accurate to my actual experience. Do not exaggerate or add accomplishments I didn't mention."
Then paste the 3 to 5 bullet points you want rewritten. Doing them in small batches gives you better results than asking ChatGPT to rewrite the entire resume at once.
Prompt 4: Update the skills section
"Based on this job description, suggest how I should reorder and update my skills section. Only include skills that are already represented in my resume. Add the exact terms from the job posting where my resume uses different language for the same skill."
This is where ATS matching matters most. The skills section is scanned directly for keyword matches. Once you've made the updates, check your ATS score to verify the match.
Prompt 5: Final review
"Review my updated resume against the job description one more time. Score the match from 1 to 10 and list any remaining gaps. Suggest specific changes to close the biggest gaps."
Use this as a final check after you've made your edits.
Tips for better results
Be specific about what not to do. ChatGPT tends to embellish. Tell it not to add skills, experience, or metrics you didn't provide. Repeat this in every prompt if needed.
Work in sections, not all at once. Rewriting your summary, bullet points, and skills section in separate prompts gives you more control and better output than "rewrite my entire resume."
Read everything before you use it. ChatGPT will sometimes produce phrasing that sounds professional but doesn't reflect how you'd describe your own work. If a bullet point feels off, rewrite it in your own words.
Try multiple versions. Run the same prompt twice and compare the outputs. Pick the best elements from each.
When to use a purpose-built tool instead
ChatGPT is flexible, but it requires you to do the analysis and prompting. If you want the tailoring handled end-to-end, Taylor Resume takes your resume and a job description and produces a tailored version automatically. It also generates a matched cover letter and scores your ATS compatibility. These prompts are also adaptable to other AI tools — see our guide to prompts that work across other AI tools.
